Your Hosts

Lucinda and Little Lilah are your hosts for the trip. They live at Rahui and will be carrying your bags. Lucinda is a keen adventurer who is always keen to share travel stories and Lilah will probably be wearing her roller skates or a princess dress. Lucinda is 6th generation family living on Rahui and travelled the world and New Zealand before returning home with an idea that has grown into the Rahui Coastal Loop. You may be lucky enough to have Bill, Lucinda’s father, guide you up to his hut for a 360 degree tour and a cuppa and some country music.

History

The Maunsell family have a rich history in the area with Tinui Station purchased by Archdeacon Robert Maunsell in 1859. Rahui is the back block of the original 20,000 acre Tinui station. It has been recognised at the Centurion family farm awards for land being in the family for 150 years. The majestic rock outcrop at Tinui named Mt Maunsell boasts the site of the first cross which was erected to commemorate the fallen soldiers of WW1.

Castlepoint had a very important role in the transport system of the day. Wool was the big export that was taken out to the ships by bullock teams. The lighthouse was built in 1913 to stand tall on the treacherous reef and help guide the ships in the night. It has always been the showpiece of Castlepoint. At night it is lit in a rainbow of colours.

Meet at Woolshed HQ on Tinui Valley Road. An easy day. Flat tarseal up a leafy quiet valley, steep but short climb up the Crusher Hill onto gravel and on to Rahui for night No tech zone here, a chance to catch up with your team over a wine or a wander around the beautiful established garden. Or enjoy a sundowner at the pond. Homemade salads will be ready in the fridge, all you need to do is cook the veges and meat on the bbq at The Sows Ear.

Day 2

The Sows Ear to Castlepoint 34km (3-4hrs)

Start on flat gravel, up the Tinui Valley Road and on to the Te Mai road. Climbing up to Te Mai airstrip for great 360 degree views of the Tararua ranges and around to the Pacific Ocean. 346m altitude. A fun/steep downhill on the Packspur road may be challenging for the more novice riders, but fun if you want to get up some speed.  The flat road winds out to the Mataikona river mouth and beachfront - a great spot to get off your bike and stretch the legs. Enjoy the 15km of beautiful coastal section; notice how the rocks change from round to flat at Suicide Rock. Pedal past the character baches and wind through a section of pines with sheer drops to the ocean. Meeting the main road for one last climb and downhill into Castlepoint. Day 3
